AUSTRALIA: Athletes ranging in age and bowling styles, and a mix of experience and emerging talent, will represent Australia at two of the sport’s major events in September this year.
A selection panel  led by TBA National Coach, Chris Batson, today announced the teams for the 22nd Asian Tenpin Bowling Championship in
Hong Kong from 2-11 September, and the inaugural WTBA World Singles Championship, to be held in Limassol, Cyprus, between 18-26 September.
Bowlers hailing from several States were chosen from the sport’s National Training Squad, and the line-ups are:-
22nd Asian Tenpin Bowling Championship: Christian Purdue, New South Wales; Chris Castle, Victoria; Sam Cooley, New South Wales; Glen Loader, New South Wales; Brendan Meads, Queensland; Stephen Cowland, New South Wales;
Women: Rebecca Whiting, Victoria; Ann-Maree Putney, New South Wales; Narelle Baker, Victoria; Bianca Flanagan, Queensland; Lexi Nicoll, New South Wales; Kaitlyn Commane, Tasmania.
WTBA World Singles Championship: Christian Purdue, New South Wales; Sam Cooley, New South Wales; Lexi Nicoll, New South Wales; Ann-Maree Putney, New South Wales.
“The bowlers for these teams are chosen from TBA’s National Training Squad and the athletes are selected by considering a variety of factors including coach-ability, natural talent, a keen desire to improve and of course current form,” said National Coach, Chris Batson.   “The Asian Tenpin Bowling Championship is the qualifying tournament for the 2013 combined World Championship with both the men’s and women’s teams needing to finish in the top 12 to qualify.  “I believe both teams will perform to a standard that will qualify
Australia for the World Championships in the USA next year,” Batson added.                                      Lynne Clay

Melbourne’s AMF Keon Park bowling centre hosted a hectic schedule of bowling action over Easter as top bowlers from around the country battled for the coveted berths as Australia’s representatives at the 2012 QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup.
Over three days from 6-8 April, a record line-up of male and female bowlers simultaneously contested the Grouped Property Services Australian Open and the Vic 150 tournaments.
27 year-old Ben Coupland from Melbourne’s Brighton East won the Australian Open trophy and top prize-money,  while former Bowling World Cup champion Ann-Maree Putney from Newcastle took the title with a superb 231.7 average over eleven games of matchplay in the Vic 150 event.   The win gives ‘AMP’ the right to challenge for the title that she won in St. Petersburg in 2007 and will be her eleventh appearance as Australia’s female representative at this prestigious international tournament.

Coupland came into the final day’s play as top seed after posting a stunning 244.63 average in 16 games of qualifying, 96 pins ahead of Victoria’s David Porto who had won the Australian Open tournament in 2006.  Following the cut to top 14, the round-robin matchplay provided a thrilling finish, but Coupland held on to victory with a narrow 16 pin margin over Porto.   Victoria’s Mac Stewart took third place and bonus-point top honours by winning eight, and tying one of the 13-game matchplay games.

“This is the first big milestone for me after returning to competitive bowling following a couple of years travelling in Europe” commented Coupland today.  “Watching events overseas really drove me to get back into training and I’m thrilled to have this opportunity to represent Australia again,” he said.
The format of the Vic 150 pairs Open and Graded female bowlers, and the partnership of Ann-Maree Putney and Susanne Jack from New South Wales withstood a concerted challenge by Lexi Nicoll and Chris Niquet, with Jacinta Gilliland and Debbie Naughten combining to take third place.   The Vic 150 also provided an edge-of-the-seat finish, with bonus points  to Putney/Jack for wins in ten of the eleven matchplay games edging out the Nicoll/Niquet pair by a mere eight pins overall.
Detailed scores for both tournaments can be found on the Tenpin Events page of the website of the sport’s national governing body, Tenpin Bowling Australia - www.tenpin.org.au                                                                    Lynne Clay

Hundreds of teenage and junior bowlers from every State and Territory in Australia, together with a group of players from New Zealand, are in Sydney to compete in tenpin bowling’s annual Junior National Championship.   It has been nine years since
Sydney hosted the sport’s Junior Nationals, and state-of-the -art Tenpin City Bowling Centre in Lidcombe is buzzing as the two-week bowling extravaganza gets underway.
Adding to the excitement and hectic schedule of pin-flying action are several individual and team events, including the popular Royal Rumble, the Bumper Challenge, the Junior Scotch Doubles and the prestigious TBA Junior Masters.  Nearby, AMF North Strathfield Bowl will host the TBA Classic Cup and the TBA Restricted Cup.
A colourful highlight of the Championship is the President’s Junior Interstate Shield, a hotly-contested team event that will be staged at Tenpin City Bowl over three consecutive days, commencing on Tuesday, 17 April.
New South Wales Minister for Sport, the Honourable Graham Annesley MP, will be joined by Shadow Minister for Family & Community Services, the Honourable Barbara Perry MP and dignitaries from Auburn City Council and the Australian Commonwealth Games Association at a short Opening ceremony on Tuesday morning to launch the President’s Junior Interstate Shield tournament.
The Junior Nationals is also the catalyst for coaching seminars, sport science forums etc. for parents, guardians and junior bowlers.  An important part of TBA’s role as the national governing body for the sport is its responsibility for the development and education of young athletes.  TBA works closely with, and is strongly supported by the Australian Sports Commission in every aspect of its role to regulate, develop and promote the sport of tenpin bowling in Australia.
For a complete schedule, live scores and results go to the 2012 Junior National Championship page on Tenpin Bowling Australia’s website - www.tenpinevents.org.au.                                                                                Lynne Clay

CANADA: The Regina, Saskatchewan group that were the leaders in the Pilot Project for the Canadian Tenpin Federation becoming a full membership organization, will receive the first CTF Merit Award at the 2012 annual meeting in Windsor, Ontario.
The Regina group made up of Dale and Gale Montgomery, Dale Martens and Sue Leslie, with the assistance of then CTF President, Adrianne Bride, Winnipeg, Manitoba started it all. They were formed in the summer of 2000.
A number of factors were involved – Sport Canada was urging all sports to be fully autonomous; the Women’s International Bowling Congress and American Bowling Congress (now United States Bowling Congress) who supplied membership services to Canadian bowlers, no longer wanted the responsibility for Canada because of the extra work involved with French translation.  CTF was basically responsible for Team Canada
The Pilot Project group had to come up with by-laws, award systems, lane certification, membership cards and everything needed to become an independent National Sports Organization.  In order for averages to be reciprocal across the borders, all playing rules had to be identical.
In the fall of 2000, the group had their first annual meeting to go over the proposals and elect the executive.  Sue Leslie, now CTF’s Administrative Assistant, was elected President.
Saskatoon, SK was added to the project and Sasktoon bowler, Stace Popoff, rolled the first 300 game sanctioned by CTF.
Other groups were added over the next few years with everything being administrated by the pilot group in Regina.
The Single Membership Proposal was discussed at the AGM in 2002 and it was voted on and approved at the 2003 annual meeting.  The proposal created the current CTF which went into operation August 1, 2004
There has been ‘growing pains’ as expecte, but without the efforts of these dedicated individuals – Dale and Gale Montgomery, Dale Martens and Sue Leslie, there would not be the Canadian Tenpin Federation serving the membership needs of Canadian tenpin bowlers.                             Hazel McLeary, CTF Public Relations Coordinator
